U-Haul purchased a massive office and warehouse space (pictured above) in Richmond, VA for $4.3 million. The 200,000-square-foot building at 8741 Landmark Road was previously occupied by a surgical supplies company. U-Haul plans to build out 126,000-square-feet of self-storage space inside the existing building, according to RichmondBizSense.com. U-Haul has already begun offering rental trucks and moving container at the site.
Ithaca, NY-based Storage Squad is seeking approval to build a 70,000-square-foot storage facility in nearby Dryden, NY. The facility will be built in the style of the company’s founders’ alma mater Cornell University and feature brick construction, a clock tower and ivy climbing the exterior walls. The proposed facility would offer 400 units inside of five buildings, with a second phase of 315 units planned in the next few years, according to Ithaca.com. Since 2011, Storage Squad has offered valet storage to various college campuses.
Lake Forest, IL-based Metro Self Storage has acquired a site near Minneapolis where it will build its seventh location in Minnesota. The planned facility at 2398 Egan Drive in Burnsville consists of a 63,000-square-foot three-story climate-controlled building and another four buildings of traditional single-story drive-up storage spanning 18,000 square feet. The 775-unit facility is scheduled to open in the spring of 2016.
Developer Dan Hudson is looking to develop a four-story self-storage facility at 780 S. Winchester Boulevard in San Jose, CA. The facility will offer 82,036-square-feet of self-storage space and about 10,500-square-feet of retail space. The developer requires a rezoning of the site before proceeding, according to the San Jose Mercury News. City officials stated they would like to see more retail space incorporated into the project.

Builder Milton Grant is constructing two new self-storage facilities in the Memphis, TN area under the name Sentry Self Storage. The sites are located at 8953 Fletcher Trace in Cordova, TN and 6495 Kirby Gate in Memphis. Each will span 90,000-square-feet when completed and offer 600 units. Grant built several storage facilities in the 1980s with his brother, according to The Commercial Appeal. He has also built car dealerships, hotels, multifamily buildings and more. The Memphis Business Journal reports that Grant pulled a $3.64 million building permit for the Cordova facility.
The first phase of Forest Gate Self-Storage in Brevard, NC is set to open at 196 Ecusta Road in November. The first phase will bring 130-units of indoor climate-controlled units to the market. Co-owner and manager Trent Hardin told the Transylvania Times that a second phase of 140 units will start based on rental progress of the initial units.

Public Storage has opened a new facility near Dallas. The new facility at 8433 Legacy Drive in Frisco, TX offers 1,000 units and spans 152,000 square feet. The facility is one of several being developed by Public Storage in Texas.
