The city of Arvada, CO, which is just west of Denver, has put a 180-day moratorium on self-storage facilities. The Arvada City Council on April 2 voted unanimously that no self-storage facilities could submit plans while city staff evaluates the potential impacts to property, public health, safety and welfare.
“We have not liked to see the use of moratoriums, but this was a situation where we need more time to look at these,” Arvada Mayor Marc Williams said during the meeting. “Once these facilities go in, it will stay there forever — they are good money generators for the people running them. But they don’t generate sales tax and they take land that could be used for other things.”
Arvada has received five applications for such facilities since deciding self-storage is an allowed use at a particular site in July 2016. Before that, the city had received just two applications in 10 years.

Jumbo Self Storage LLC will build a five-story, 119,523-square-foot self-storage facility in Burlington, MA, after finally being given approval from a planning board following months of continuances. The property is located off Wheeler Road and Blanchard Road. The site is on 11.025 acres. Jumbo Self Storage has worked with the Conservation Commission to address conservation issues it’s handling. There’s a self-storage building boom in Richmond, VA. Developer HHHunt Corp. is about to open a new facility at 11530 Nuckols Road. The company also is putting up a facility on Atlee Station Road in Hanover County; it’s set for a December opening. Also, a new facility is planned on 1.87 acres at the southwest corner of Glenside Drive and Forest Avenue. The Henrico Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing about the proposal on May 8.

The Metropolitan Board of Zoning Appeals in Muncie, IN, approved a zoning variance for a Brad’s Self Storage facility at 3911 W. Bethal Ave. Brad McIntire, who plans to put up four buildings, will locate them southwest of Bethel and Morrison Road, on the south side of an Access to Care Pharmacy. Source: Star Press
U-Haul is building a seven-story moving and self-storage facility on 9.36 acres at 2111 Richmond Terrace in Port Richmond on Staten Island, NY. The facility is expected to be complete in early 2020. What’s the fate of the Banksy seal stencil mural at 1249 Coney Island Ave. at a former Mobil gas station in Midwood, Brooklyn, NY? Demolition awaits the building, which is scheduled to be replaced by a four-story, 50,000-square-foot self-storage facility that Safe N Lock will build. Still to be decided: Will the mural be removed? Removed and preserved? Demolished with the rest of the building? Nothing’s been decided yet.
