U-Haul plans to build climate-controlled and heated self-storage units that “would be the first of their kind in Alaska,” according to John Norris, president of U-Haul of Alaska.

U-Haul plans to buy the former Fred Meyer building at 650 N. Cobb St. in Palmer, AK, relieving town residents that opposed a proposed shooting range going into that site. U-Haul plans to open the facility in June.  Source: KTUU

Proguard Self Storage is building a facility at 10200 Katy Freeway near Memorial City, TX that will have 270,000 square feet and 1,750 units. Proguard operates five centers in the metro Houston area, where it is based. One of them is a 1,100-unit facility in Midtown that has climate-controlled wine-storage units that can hold up to 700 bottles. The company declined to comment on any projects. Source: Houston Chronicle

Manhattan, NY-based Equator Capital Management, a private equity firm, signed a 99-year lease with Zebra Place LLC, the property owner, and is building a four-story, 136,000-square-foot self-storage facility in Charleston on the South Shore of Staten Island, NY. A one-story building at 2601 Veterans Road West, taking up nearly 2 acres, will be demolished to make room for the self-storage facility. Source: silive.com

U-Haul will soon be presenting a self-storage facility in southeast Yakima thanks to the recent acquisition of a former Kmart at 2304 E. Nob Hill Blvd. 

U-Haul has purchased another former big-box space for the purpose of upgrading it to offer more services in southeast Yakima, WA. U-Haul bought a former Kmart store of 116,702 square feet at 2304 E. Nob Hill Blvd. U-Haul Moving & Storage at East Nob Hill opened a temporary showroom, offering truck and trailer sharing, towing equipment, moving supplies and U-Box portable moving and storage containers. The facility will have about 1,000 indoor units. The 11.54-acre lot eventually will have RV/boat/vehicle storage as well.  Source: PR Newswire

The City Council approved the rezoning of a land parcel for self-storage units by a 4-1 vote in Clearwater, FL. A three-story, 69,000-square-foot office building is on the site now. Jonathan Dorman, president of StorCon Development, wants to buy the lot in order to build a self-storage facility.  City planning board members and several residents of the Clearwater Neighborhood Coalition opposed the rezoning, saying that self-storage was out of character with the area. Source: Tampa Bay Newspapers 

U-Haul bought a 44,682-square-foot warehouse at 1410 E. 7th St. in Joplin, MO, and plans to build a moving and self-storage facility there. U-Haul Moving & Storage of Joplin is operating out of a temporary location at 2521 E. 7th St. It also has 124 self-storage units at the site, which is one-half mile east of the new address. The warehouse, which had been vacant for more than 10 years, will have 308 self-storage units and 60 outside drive-up units. Source: Market Insider

Public Storage has opened up its newest facility in Plano, TX.

Public Storage (NYSE: PSA) opened a two-story self-storage facility at 2047 Witt Road in Frisco, TX, a suburb of Plano.  It has more than 750 units. Located near FM 423, the Dallas North Tollway and Lake Lewisville, its prime market areas are Frisco and Little Elm. It’s the second facility that Public Storage has built in Plano since 2015. Source: Business Wire

CubeSmart will operate a 763-unit, 77,000-square-foot self-storage facility at 1200 State Highway 66 in Garland TX, a northeastern suburb of Dallas. It opens May 7. Henry S. Miller Cos. is the owner. Source: ReOnline
